IVF is not cheap. The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA), which is the official licensing organ for UK fertility clinics, estimates that a single cycle of IVF can range in cost from around £4,000 to £8,000.
The NHS will reimburse women between the ages of 23 and 39 who meet the – fairly restrictive – eligibility criteria for one cycle of IVF. Eligibility criteria vary by location but often include no previous children and a diagnosis that does not lend itself to any other infertility treatment. There is a waiting list for NHS-funded treatment and wait time may be quite long. Therefore, it is especially important not to waste any time seeking medical help if you are hoping to take advantage of the NHS-funded treatment option.
The alternative is to pay for IVF-treatment yourself. Approximately 80% of IVF patients end up paying for the treatment themselves. Of course, if several cycles of IVF are needed this can mean a severe strain on your finances.
Cost can differ widely from clinic to clinic, especially if you are also considering clinics outside of the UK. Private clinics set their own prices and are not regulated by any official body. It might be a good idea to get several quotes in order to compare prices. However, make sure that you are not comparing apples with oranges. Look exactly at what is included in the price. Consulting or counselling fees are included at some clinics but charged separately at others. Infertility drugs are another major cost factor which is often not included in the stated IVF price. Be careful when looking at clinics abroad. While these can at times be less costly, it is important to make sure that their quality and safety standards are comparable to those of clinics in the UK.
