Your period is the way your body prepares itself to get pregnant. In most women, the menstrual cycle starts around age 12 and continues until sometime between age 45 and 50.
A woman’s first period is called the menarche and signals the onset of fertility, the ability to become pregnant. A woman’s last period is called menopause and signals the end of fertility.
The word period refers to the cyclical nature of menstruation, a cycle which for most women is about 28 days. During those 28 days, your body prepares for fertilization in five distinct phases occurring in a precise schedule.
The first four days are considered the menstrual phase. The next seven days are called the follicular phase, which leads into ovulation. If fertilization does not occur within 24 hours, the luteal phase begins, lasting for about 10 days during which the body begins to prepare to get rid of the thickened lining of the uterus and leading, finally, into the ischemic phase when the body discards the uterine lining.
